George undertook a tool making apprenticeship before becoming a design engineer. In 1961 he joined the CEGB, commencing his 40 year ESI career. He was one of the early nuclear reactor operators and worked in a variety of Power Stations and Transmission before becoming Station Manager in several Nuclear Stations. He became Director of Generation, Nuclear Electric PLC in 1991, Executive Director Operations, Nuclear Electric Ltd in 1995 and Executive Director, British Energy Generation in 1997. He retired last year. He studied Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Portsmouth and Nuclear Engineering at Bristol and Calder Hall. He is a Charted Engineer and Fellow of IMechE. and InstE. and a Member of INucE. He has served on various international nuclear safety Committees, including IAEA and INPO. He is Governor and Deputy Chairman World Association Nuclear of Operators, Paris Centre, and serves on its World Governing Board. He became President of BNES this year.
