Our world has an insatiable appetite for energy. Demand is driven by population growth, economic growth and technological developments. World population is projected to grow from 6 billion people today to 9 billion in 2050, with most of the growth occurring in developing countries. By 2025 our demand for primary energy is expected to rise by over 50% whilst our demand for electricity will almost double over the same period. The UK is not immune to these pressures and is facing some tough energy decisions. As our indigenous oil and gas reserves decline, and with many of our nuclear and coal stations due to retire in the next 10-15 years, how will the UK Government fulfil its objectives for clean, reliable and affordable energy in the future? The Prime Minister has clearly stated in his Labour Party Conference speech that the need for new nuclear build will be debated in an energy review in 2006, and that decisions will be made in the lifetime of this parliament.
