The energy gap
We believe nuclear power will play a key role in generating low carbon energy for the future. The closure of existing power stations, the decline of indigenous reserves of North Sea gas and the need to combat climate change mean that the UK faces a potential energy gap. New generating plants are needed to ensure continued electricity supply towards the end of the decade and beyond.

New nuclear build projects have a key role to play in keeping the nation’s light on, as part of a balanced low carbon energy supply.

Hinkley Point C – creating more than a new power plant
Hinkley Point C is the first new UK nuclear power station planned this century.   Following extensive consultation on their proposals for Hinkley Point C, EDF Energy submitted a Development Consent Order (DCO) application to the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) on 31 October 2011.  The IPC was established on 1 October 2009 under the Planning Act 2008 to streamline the planning system for nationally significant infrastructure projects (NSIPs).

Having been accepted for examination by the IPC on 24 November 2011 there is now an opportunity for people and organisations to register their interest about EDF Energy’s application and make a representation to the Infrastructure Planning Commission.  The deadline to do so is 23 January 2012 and details are outlined below.

Hinkley Point C – at-a-glance
Hinkley Point was identified by the Government as one of eight sites in the UK potentially suitable for new nuclear power stations.

Hinkley Point C will provide enough energy for around five million homes, helping to contribute to the UK’s vision of providing a secure supply of safe, reliable, affordable and low carbon energy for the future.

With a strong local focus, the Hinkley Point C project will create a new generation of skilled engineers, thousands of job opportunities for individuals, as well as contract opportunities for local firms.  As well as supporting the nation’s economic recovery, the project aims to give a real boost to the Somerset and South West economy.

Key Benefits:
The construction of the first new nuclear power station in the UK for 20 years brings with it huge opportunities for local people and businesses across the region and the UK
  • At least 5,000 jobs will be created in the South West during the construction period
  • 900 jobs throughout the  60 years operation
  • £100m of economic benefit annually for the regional economy during peak construction
  • £40m per year during the 60-year operation of the power station.
As well as building a twin-reactor nuclear power station capable of generating enough low carbon electricity for five million homes, EDF Energy's plans also include:
  • An on-site campus and two campuses in Bridgwater to accommodate  over 1,500 construction workers
  • Four park and ride sites to transport workers by bus to the main development site, thereby reducing the number of cars on local roads
  • A temporary jetty and a refurbished wharf to allow materials to be delivered by sea, reducing the number of lorries on local roads
  • A new bypass to the west of Cannington and various highway improvement schemes in and around Bridgwater.
