We believe nuclear power will play a key role in generating low carbon energy for the future. The closure of existing power stations, the decline of indigenous reserves of North Sea gas and the need to combat climate change mean that the UK faces a potential energy gap. New generating plants are needed to ensure continued electricity supply towards the end of the decade and beyond. New nuclear build projects have a key role to play in keeping the nation’s light on, as part of a balanced low carbon energy supply.
Following extensive consultation on their proposals for Hinkley Point C, EDF Energy submitted a Development Consent Order (DCO) application to the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) on 31 October 2011. The IPC was established on 1 October 2009 under the Planning Act 2008 to streamline the planning system for nationally significant infrastructure projects (NSIPs).
Having been accepted for examination by the IPC on 24 November 2011 there is now an opportunity for people and organisations to register their interest about EDF Energy’s application and make a representation to the Infrastructure Planning Commission. The deadline to do so is 23 January 2012 and details are outlined here.
