Response to the Report on Fukushima by the Chief Nuclear Inspector | Print |  E-mail

The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) has welcomed the report Japanese earthquake and Tsunami: Implications for the UK Nuclear Industry published by the Chief Nuclear Inspector, Dr. Mike Weightman.

The final report makes a number of findings, including that there is no reason to curtail the operation of UK sites, there is no reason to revise strategic advice to the regulator on which the Nuclear National Policy Statements are based and the UK’s safety reviews are robust.

Keith Parker, Chief Executive of the NIA said:  “The Nuclear Industry Association welcomes the publication of the final Weightman report and is pleased that it serves to further endorse the findings in his interim report published earlier this year.”

“Safety is and will continue to be the industry’s highest priority and we are reassured by Dr Weightman’s conclusion that both existing nuclear plants in the UK and new build designs are safe. Nuclear must continue to play an important role in the UK’s energy mix as a secure, low carbon energy supply. The publication of this report allows us to maintain momentum in our nuclear policy to continue planning for our energy future.”
