The House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee published its report into Nuclear Research and Development Capabilities on November 22nd 2011. 

Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association Keith Parker welcomed the report, describing it as both “realistic and achievable.” He said:  

“It is evident that whilst the Government’s current focus has been very much based on facing up to the immediate need to replace our current nuclear fleet, not enough consideration has been given to research and development requirements that might be necessary beyond 2025. If the UK fails to construct a co-ordinated research and development plan going into the future, there will be no choice but to depend on skills and technologies from elsewhere – to the detriment of our own manufacturing and education sectors.” 

“As the cheapest low-carbon form of energy, nuclear will be vital for our energy needs and security going far beyond 2025. If the UK is to maintain its expertise and keep the lights on,  it is imperative that a long-term energy strategy is set out now to avoid making short-term policy decisions later.”
